protect-your-outdoor-furniture-with-proper-landscaping-chantilly-vaAlthough you can use a canopy, porch overhang, or awning to protect your outdoor furniture, you may not want to use a canopy or you may not have an overhang to provide protection. However, a viable alternative is to use landscaping to your advantage, which can supply protection while also improving your yard’s looks.

Use Trees for Shade and Protection

If you already have mature trees in your backyard, you may want to consider designing your outdoor space around them, or placing outdoor furniture where the trees can provide shade.

Protection from the sun will help your furniture last longer from reduced sun exposure.

Although you can apply a water sealant on most outdoor furniture, you will find that trees and furniture in the right position can work well together for protection from the rain.

Make Sure to Prune the Trees

While there are numerous benefits to having trees near your outdoor furniture, you also want to keep your trees healthy and pruned, especially because trees that are not pruned can lead to a hazard from broken limbs.

Plant Bushes to Protect from Winds

If you get a lot of wind on your property, you can have landscaping professional’s plant bushes around area in which you are going to place your outdoor furniture. This natural barrier will prevent lightweight furniture from getting knocked over, as well as making it a more pleasant outdoor experience for you.

Carefully planned landscaping can work greatly in your favor for protecting outdoor furniture. However, you should also take your time when buying furniture to use outside to make sure it meets your wants and needs.

dust-off-your-outdoor-furniture-and-get-it-ready-for-spring-chantilly-vaThe weather outside is getting a little warmer, which means that now is the time to dust off your outdoor furniture and get it ready for Spring. Here are some things to keep in mind to ensure your patio furniture is ready for you to enjoy again.

The first step is to take your furniture out of storage and/or remove any vinyl covers you may have placed over it in the fall. Place your furniture in a sunny area of the yard so that you can spray it down thoroughly with a garden hose. Next, use a solution of mild dish soap and water to wipe your pieces down from top to bottom. If needed, use a soft-bristled brush to help you get into hard-to-reach areas. Finish with a cool water rinse, and then allow your furniture to dry.

Cushions also need cleaning in Spring, and the best way to do that is to tie them to a clothesline so you can spray them down thoroughly. Next, scrub them vigorously with a stiff bristled (but not wire) brush on both sides. Leave them hanging until they are completely dry, unless your clothesline is in direct sunlight. In that case, you should remove them and hang them in a shaded area instead to keep them from fading.

Look each piece over carefully for signs of rust or other damage. If rust spots are discovered, sand them lightly with heavy grit sandpaper, and then touch them up with a protective paint. If the finish appears worn, you can then follow that up with a fresh coat of new paint in order to get your furniture looking like new again.

Provide some protection for your outdoor pieces by adding a coat of furniture polish to help repel dust. Finish by lubricating hardware with a thin coat of WD-40 to prevent rust from forming.

While you may not be outside a lot, it’s still important that you take care of your deck furniture so that it’s in good shape come spring. Luckily, caring for your furniture is very simple if you set aside time to get it ready before the temperature begins to dip.

Invest in Weatherproof Covers

The easiest way to prevent damage to your patio furniture is through investing in weatherproof covers. When buying covers for your furniture, you’ll want to make sure to opt for durable materials and that the cover will tightly fit the pieces. The cover needs to leave no openings, allowing your furniture to be secure underneath.

Move Your Furniture Into Storage

Another good way to ensure that your deck furniture will stay in good shape is through removing it from the deck. Snow and rain can cause significant damage  to your furniture, so it may be a viable option to move it to your garage or a shed.

Make Any Repairs Before Spring

If you use your patio often during the spring and summer, it’s likely that it’s been damaged due to regular use. Repainting your furniture and taking care of any scratches or dents can ensure that you restore the condition of your furniture so that it continues looking its best.

After purchasing furniture for your deck, it’s vital that you take the time to care for it through all four seasons. Contact us for more helpful tips for maintaining your deck furniture in the years to come.
