The weather outside is getting a little warmer, which means that now is the time to dust off your outdoor furniture and get it ready for Spring. Here are some things to keep in mind to ensure your patio furniture is ready for you to enjoy again.
The first step is to take your furniture out of storage and/or remove any vinyl covers you may have placed over it in the fall. Place your furniture in a sunny area of the yard so that you can spray it down thoroughly with a garden hose. Next, use a solution of mild dish soap and water to wipe your pieces down from top to bottom. If needed, use a soft-bristled brush to help you get into hard-to-reach areas. Finish with a cool water rinse, and then allow your furniture to dry.
Cushions also need cleaning in Spring, and the best way to do that is to tie them to a clothesline so you can spray them down thoroughly. Next, scrub them vigorously with a stiff bristled (but not wire) brush on both sides. Leave them hanging until they are completely dry, unless your clothesline is in direct sunlight. In that case, you should remove them and hang them in a shaded area instead to keep them from fading.
Look each piece over carefully for signs of rust or other damage. If rust spots are discovered, sand them lightly with heavy grit sandpaper, and then touch them up with a protective paint. If the finish appears worn, you can then follow that up with a fresh coat of new paint in order to get your furniture looking like new again.
Provide some protection for your outdoor pieces by adding a coat of furniture polish to help repel dust. Finish by lubricating hardware with a thin coat of WD-40 to prevent rust from forming.
